THE CATTERALL CRIER CATTERALL PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Spring, 2009 Issue 9
Chairman Report It is a great privilege for me to be completing my fourth year as chairman of your Parish Council. I would like to thank all of my fellow councillors for the support and hard work that they have provided over the year. Several councillors, including the chairman, attended various training courses through the year which, we hope, will help us to provide a better, more professional service to our residents. We are currently in the process of installing the second phase of our CCTV programme in the grounds of the Pickerings Hotel. We hope that this, together with the speed indicator devices (SIDS) already in operation, will make a significant contribution to community safety. In partnership with Kirkland Parish Council, the council is initiating the development of a youth group, under the chairmanship of Councillor Nick Harrison. Some funding has already been obtained and we are hopeful of reporting more progress in the near future. You will no doubt be aware of the regular newsletters we have been publishing over the past 12 months and this, together with other relevant factors, may now lead to our adoption as a Quality Parish Council. I would like to thank our local PCSO Craig, who has done a great job over the past year, liaising with the Parish Council. Crime and anti-social behaviour both show significant reductions year-on-year. I regret to announce that, because of re-location, we shall be losing our deputy chairman, Councillor David Thompson. I would just like to thank him for his many years of hard work on our behalf. This does leave a casual vacancy on the council at the present time. Thank you all, once again, for your help and support. Gurth Wilson Catterall Parish Council Chairman Finance The Parish Council is responsible for proper accounting records, safeguarding the assets and taking steps to prevent fraud and other irregularities. There are accounting policies and procedures in place to mitigate exposure to major risk, which are reviewed annually. The Councillors believe they make reasonable and prudent judgements and estimates. The accounts are a matter of public information and can be viewed at any time. Receipts and Payments Account for Catterall Parish Council 2008/2009

Catterall Neighbourhood Policing Team ![]() The Team would like to report that there has been a progressive decline in both Crime and Anti Social Behaviour in the area due to the vigilance of residents and the high visibility policing in Catterall. However we would like to re-emphasize that residents should be aware of an increase in domestic burglaries in the area and ask those residents to be observant and report any suspicious persons and vehicles seen in and around the area. Residents are also reminded to secure properties and vehicles appropriately, to assist in deterring the opportunist criminals and to report suspicious persons carrying out cold calling and scrap removal as this is another problem that is occurring more frequently. Once again we would like to pass our thanks for your assistance in dealing with these issues and advise that your neighbourhood policing team can be contacted on: 607834
Catterall Gala To everyone who helped, took part in or came along and supported Catterall Gala a great big thank you. It was a wonderful day and one for our village to be proud of. Some one you know just passed their driving test?
The risk of a 17 to 21 year old being involved in a crash is about three and a half times more than the average motorist. Taking a Learner out for extra practice sessions can be a daunting task. The Pre-Pass Support Scheme (PPSS) and Perfect Partner CD-ROM can help anyone who takes a Learner driver out for extra practice sessions, to structure their driving and help prepare the Learner properly to enhance their skills and safe driving attitudes. To find out when the next PPSS Course is or to get your FREE CD-ROM call 0800 328 1635 or email roadsafety@lancashire.gov.uk

PROBLEMS IN THE PARISH The Parish Council employs a Parish Lengthsman to keep the Parish tidy and well maintained. Each week problems of fly-tipping, flooding, damage to public footpaths or litter bins needing emptying are reported. But whilst Timmy, the Lengthsman, finds most of the problems, should any Catterall resident find such problems, these can be reported to Timmy as the first point of contact, the Clerk or any of the Parish Councillors listed on the back page.
More than 130 Lancashire walks to download and print FREE! There’s no doubt about it, walking is good for you. It’s good for your heart, it’s good for your lungs, it’s good for the muscle and bone growth of your children and it’s good for your feeling of wellbeing! Strong scientific evidence now supports the many benefits to health of regular walking – it is recommended that we take at least 10,000 steps a day.Studies show that walking can: Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke Lower blood pressure Reduce high cholesterol Reduce body fat Enhance mental well being Walking offers a great way to help kids get the active habit. If parents express excitement about the prospect of a walk in the countryside, they are more likely to transmit this feeling to their children. It’s important to treat the walk as an exploration or adventure and to go at the child’s pace, no matter how often they want to stop and look at things; take treats to eat and plenty to drink; and head for some landmark that will appeal to them such as a castle, a playground, an ice cream van or a boating pond. If children experience walking as part of a fun activity they are more likely to want to go again. So, how do you find out what is on offer? John Harris, a keen walker, got fed up with the lack of information on walks that were going on in the county, so, he decided that if he couldn’t find what he was looking for, he had better create it! So www.walkinginlancs.co.uk came into being. www.walkinginlancs.co.uk gives you all the information you need for the best walking in the county. Details of more than 130 walks to download and print free, details of all the Lancashire walking groups, maps and walk books – plus loads more information. So check out the website and get walking!
Green Box Re-cycling The Parish Council has received a number of complaints about the green box re-cycling service, the mess created during collection and left on the road side and in drives and where the boxes are deposited after emptying. Wyre Borough Council wishes to assure residents that the issue of this poor practice is being taken up and they would welcome any feedback from other residents who consider the service they receive is a problem. If you are not happy about the collection service please ring Wyre Borough Council on 891000 and select option 2.
